As a chef, you have the freedom to apply for jobs in a wide variety of locations and countries. Whether you are accepted depends on many other factors, of course. With a recognised, completed training programme as a chef, you already have a good chance of proving yourself.

However, many restaurants expect their applicants to have previous experience in the profession. If you want to work in a country with a very exotic cuisine, for example, it is an advantage if you are familiar with it and understand it. If this is not the case, you often still have the opportunity to start as a sous chef or assistant and slowly work your way up.

The profession of chef comes with various requirements. For example, you must be prepared to work under high pressure and to tight deadlines. Work in the kitchen is often hectic and exhausting, and your working hours are likely to vary greatly from a traditional 9-to-5 job. Nevertheless, you will have the opportunity to develop your artistic side, contribute your own creations and enjoy the exhilaration of creating something that delights guests. You may even be able to contribute by bringing in family recipes and specialities from your home country, thereby expanding the kitchen’s repertoire.

Depending on which country you work in, you will need to be prepared for language skills to be a prerequisite. However, in the hotel and tourism industry, you often have the advantage of working in an international team and communication in the kitchen is mainly in English. If this is the case, however, you must be aware that your English must be sufficient to be able to take instructions and then implement them correctly and vice versa – communication is an important factor in the kitchen to ensure that everything runs smoothly.

If you’ve always wanted to work where others go on holiday, don’t miss this opportunity and become a chef abroad!
