It’s no secret that flying isn’t great for the environment. At the same time, travel comes with so many benefits: it inspires us, exposes us to new cultures, and helps us discover fresh ways to solve problems. And the best part of all? Traveling — and especially living and working abroad — fills our lives with joy and unforgettable memories.
But what about choosing “eco” destinations? We’re not necessarily talking about places to stay (although choosing an eco-friendly hotel or B&B whenever possible definitely matters). We’re talking about destinations themselves: cities, regions, and countries that keep investing in the wellbeing of our planet, and that offer visitors plenty of green alternatives, nature protection, and sustainable options.
Do you want to live and work abroad while also doing your bit for the environment? Then you should definitely explore the 5 most eco-friendly cities in Europe.

Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen previously won the title European Green Capital (2013). This city is also often mentioned as one of the most bike-friendly places in the world — and it’s easy to see why. With hundreds of kilometres of cycle lanes, cycling is simply part of daily life here.
Copenhagen has also set ambitious climate goals and has been working for years on cleaner mobility, greener energy, and a more sustainable lifestyle overall. And if you enjoy plant-based food, you’ll love the wide range of vegetarian and vegan restaurants using organic ingredients.
As if that wasn’t enough, Denmark is also known for the “hygge” lifestyle — the idea that a great life doesn’t require endless consumption. If you’re planning to live and work abroad, Copenhagen (and Denmark in general) could be a great match.
Bristol, United Kingdom
Bristol was named European Green Capital (2015) and has built a strong reputation for sustainability ever since. The city is known for bold environmental initiatives, practical solutions, and a local culture that takes climate action seriously.
Bristol also has a creative, alternative vibe, with a strong community spirit. You’ll find everything from local food projects to sustainability-focused events — and plenty of street art across the city that gives it a unique energy. If you want a city that combines green thinking with personality, Bristol is a great option.
Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona is famous for its beaches, tapas bars, and buzzing nightlife — but it’s also working hard to become a much greener city. The local government has shared plans to expand green spaces and increase the number of trees across the city, creating more shade, cleaner air, and a better quality of life for residents.
You’ll also find beach clean-up initiatives and community actions focused on protecting nature. Barcelona is constantly balancing tourism with sustainability, and the city has introduced measures to manage tourism pressure and protect local neighbourhoods.
Thinking about living and working abroad soon — and can you picture yourself in Spain? Barcelona might be the perfect mix of city life, sea views, and a greener future.
Ljubljana, Slovenia
Ljubljana is one of those cities you don’t always hear about — but it should absolutely be on your radar. This city takes sustainability seriously and was awarded European Green Capital (2016).
Ljubljana is known for its car-free city centre, which makes the heart of the city calm, clean, and extremely walkable. A large part of the city area is made up of public green spaces, and Ljubljana has also made major progress in waste management and recycling.
If you want to live abroad in a place that feels peaceful, green, and genuinely sustainable, Ljubljana is a strong contender.
Amsterdam, the Netherlands
One of our personal favourites. In Amsterdam, bikes are everywhere — and honestly, it sometimes feels like there are more bikes than people. With extensive cycle paths and pedestrian-friendly areas, the city is easy to explore without needing a car.
Amsterdam also has beautiful parks for when you want to slow down, and it’s full of organic cafés, vegan-friendly spots, and local markets. The Netherlands in general is known for having strong infrastructure that supports a lower-impact lifestyle — making Amsterdam a great option for eco-minded travellers and expats.
What makes these European cities so eco-friendly?
Across Europe, cities are working to become healthier, more attractive, and more sustainable. The goal is not only to reduce emissions and protect nature, but also to improve quality of life for people living there.
Over the past decades, many European cities have invested heavily in things like public transport, cycling infrastructure, greener neighbourhoods, waste management, and cleaner energy solutions. Even so, there are still environmental challenges affecting millions of Europeans — which is why sustainable city planning remains such an important focus.
Are you a conscious traveller and thinking about living and working abroad? Then these five cities are a great place to start.
