UK Visa Information

If you are a British citizen, a Swiss national or a national of a country in the European Economic Area (EEA) you do not need permission to work in the United Kingdom.

The EEA includes these countries:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom.

Bulgarian and Romanian citizens can be resident in the UK for up to 3 months without a visa but will need to obtain a work permit if they wish to take employment.

If you have a parent that was born in the UK or Ireland you may not need a visa at all and may qualify for citizenship or right of abode and could apply for a British or Irish passport. If one of your grandparents was british, then you may be eligible for an ancestral visa. For more information contact your nearest British Embassy or Consulate

Nationals of certain countries can visit the UK for up to three months without a visa but will need to be granted a work permit to take up employment.

Nationals from the following countries need a visa to visit the UK:

National of countries not mentioned above will not need a visa to visit the UK for up to 6 months.

Working Holiday Visas are available to Citizens from Commonwealth Countries and a Youth Exchange Scheme is available to citizens of Japan.

.The working holiday-maker scheme is an arrangement where a person aged between 17 and 30 can come to the United Kingdom (UK) for an extended holiday for up to two years and may do part-time or casual work. Work must not be the main reason for your visit.

The Japan: Youth Exchange Scheme allows Japanese nationals aged between 18 and 25 to come to the United Kingdom for an extended holiday for up to 12 months

You qualify as a working holiday-maker if:

* You are a Commonwealth Citizen, British Dependent Territories Citizen or British Overseas Citizen

* You want to come to the UK for an extended holiday and intend to take some incidental employment

* You are single or are married to a person who also qualifies as a working holiday-maker and you plan to take the working holiday together

* You do not have any dependent children who are aged five years or over, or who will be five before you complete your holiday

* Your holiday ,and not work, is the main reason for your visit

* You can support and accommodate yourself without help from public funds

* You do not have any commitments which require a regular salary

* You can pay for your onward journey

* You plan to leave the UK at the end of your holiday

How long can I stay?
You can only stay in the UK for two years as a working holiday-maker, from the date you are given leave to enter the UK. Any time you spend outside the UK during that period will be counted as part of the two years.

After 12 months in the UK, if they meet the necessary criteria, participants will be allowed to “switch” status, letting them take up work permit employment.

A UK Working Holiday Visa will allow you to work in The Channel Islands including Jersey.

International Working Holiday And Temporary Work Visa Chart

Four Year UK Ancestry Employment Visas are available to those have a grandparent who was born within the shores of the United Kingdom. You must be a Commonwealth Citizen in order to be considered for this Visa.

If you are from a country that is not stated above you may be able to obtain a work permit if you have specialist skills or qualifications sought by UK Employers

Work Permit applications can only be made by an employer in the UK who wishes to employ a foreign national to work in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. A Work Permit application should be made for a named person to do a specific job for the employer.

Am I eligible to get a UK work permit?

To hold a UK work permit, you will generally need to have high level skills and experience. To get a 'full' work permit you will need either

A UK degree or equivalent qualification

3 years senior level experience in a relevant, specialised area

An HND level occupation which entitles you to do a specific job

A general HND level qualification and 1 year relevant experience

3 years relevant experience at NVQ level 3 or above

If Your Spouse Is British you are eligible initially for a one-year probationary spouse visa. After one year you can apply for indefinite leave to remain.

Student Visas are available to those that have gained a confirmed place for a course at a publicly funded establishment of higher or further education; or at a bona fide private educational establishment, or independent fee paying school.

Those students whose student visa is issued for longer than six months, may then engage in casual work for up to 20hrs per week, and up to 40hrs per week during college holidays. The permission to work is not intended in order to provide monies on which to subsist.
