The Monkey Sanctuary in Looe, Cornwall, has opportunities for volunteers to help care for a group of woolly monkeys and a growing number of rescued ex-pet capuchin monkeys and Barbary macaques.
The Monkey Sanctuary is the flagship project of Wild Futures (registered charity number 1102532) and is run by an experienced team of keepers assisted by volunteers. Each year the Sanctuary educates thousands of visitors on primates in the wild and in captivity, on rehabilitation of ex-pet primates and on the ethics and welfare issues related to the keeping of wild animals in captivity. The sanctuary also promotes sustainable living and conservation through recycling, the preservation of habitats including those of native wildlife, vegetarianism and the use of ecological and Fair Trade products.
Volunteers are welcome for stays of 2-5 weeks. Tasks can include preparing monkey food, cleaning enclosures, campaigning, fundraising, enrichment making, domestic chores, art projects, assisting in the café and shop, running educational and crafts workshops for children, maintenance work and gardening.
Volunteers are invited to live communally on site, and are asked for a donation of ₤40 per week to cover food and utility costs.
