L'Arche Recruits Assistants To Live And Work In Communities Of People With Learning Disabilities In Centres Across The UK. Positions Available Throughout The Year.

L’Arche means ‘The Ark’ in French. L'Arche has nine Communities in the UK. Another 2 are being planned. They are all ordinary houses and real homes. More than 100 people with learning disabilities live there. Another 100 Assistants live with them.

L'Arche is based on Christian principles, welcoming people of all faiths and none. Men and women with learning disabilities aged 18 and over are at our heart. They are people with a wide range of disabilities, independence and needs, from varied backgrounds and of different ages.

Our Identity and Mission statements set out the basis for our Communities in the UK and around the world.

As a L'Arche assistant you'll have your own room in a shared house.  Your daily needs - food, laundry, etc - will be met and you'll receive a modest income.

Typically five or six assistants share a house with the same number of people with learning disabilities.  Together you'll do the cooking and shopping, go to college or work.  Meals are eaten together much like any family.

There are regular days off and generous holidays.  You'll be encouraged to work towards appropriate qualifications including S/NVQs and in areas such as first aid and food hygiene.  You'll have the opportunity to develop your leadership skills and you may learn something new like sign language, craftwork or horticulture.

Tim, an assistant in L'Arche Preston says 'Living with a whole range of people, with all sorts of abilities, gives me the chance to make real relationships.  People with learning disabilities have so much to give - they help me as much as I help them.  It's a way of life I'd really recommend.'
