Voluntary And Conservation Work Experiences

Ranj Makhni from the UK worked as a Voluntary Teacher In Darjeeling, India with Mondo Challenge

Tasks involved Teaching English to young children aged 4-9 . Trying to generally improve the standard of learning in the school as well as trying to encourage the kids to use their imagination.

I got more job satisfaction out of it than anything else I have done in my life. I felt so proud of my experience especially when the children (who couldnt speak any English before) wouldn't stop talking to me by the time I left.

The most enjoyable part was waking up in the Himalyas every morning. Trekking to the
top of the nearest mountain every morning for daybreak.

The least enjoyable was saying goodbye to the school and all the students.

I would recommend this to others because its the best thing you will probably ever do.

Next I will be travelling to Sri Lanka where I will be teaching IT to Buddhist
monks whilst living for 3 months in their monastary.

You don't have to pay a fortune (£3000!!!) for these experiences, check out some of the smaller organisations; I went with MondoChallenge.

Hermes Carlyon from the UK worked as a Conservation Research Assistant with Frontier in Kilombero Valley, Tanzania

Tasks involved conservation practical work to be carried out in line with correct scientific procedures. Camp maintenance including cooking, cleaning and hygiene precautions.

I learnt about wildlife of Tanzania, conservation techniques and gained an insight into life in 3rd world after having been based away from tourist areas and meeting many of the locals.

Having no electricity or running water took some getting used to but you know it's worth it when you wake up one morning and there's a herd of elephant bathing within a stone's throw of your mosquito net.

The most enjoyable part was waking up every morning knowing you're in the African wilderness doing something worthwhile.

Having a tropical illness for 5 days was the least enjoyable

I would recommend this experience to the adventurous type
